Michelmersh proudly took home four awards at this year’s Brick Awards, including the prestigious Architects’ Choice Award, at the ceremony held on 5th November. Joined by partners, architects and contractors, the Michelmersh team celebrated being part of some truly outstanding examples of contemporary brickwork.
This year, the Michelmersh Group’s diverse portfolio of clay products excelled across the Refurbishment, Large Housing, Specialist Brickwork and Commercial categories. The results reflect the versatility of Michelmersh bricks and their ability to elevate both modern and traditional architecture. Across all projects, judges recognised how our materials contribute to durable, beautiful and sustainable design.
Architects Choice Award & Commercial Commendation:
Marylebone Place by Fletcher Priest Architects won the Architects’ Choice Award, with Charnwood’s Legacy bricks carefully selected to achieve an elegant gradation from grey to white across the façade. The design also incorporates bold red brickwork to complement the tonal palette, creating a refined reinterpretation of a 1930s neo-Georgian office building. Brick detailing, including recessed window arches, brings visual depth and a welcoming presence to this sensitive reinvention in a traditionally conservative part of London.

Refurbishment Award:
One of the Group’s standout projects, Tileyard North in Wakefield, saw Hawkins\Brown transform the former Rutland Mills into one of the UK’s largest creative hubs outside London. Through careful restoration and adaptive reuse, the design celebrates the site’s industrial heritage while introducing new spaces for collaboration and innovation. Blockleys Windermere Grey and Park Royal bricks were selected to complement the mill’s original patchwork of historic brickwork, seamlessly blending the old and the new.
Judges’ Comments:
“A meticulous restoration that balances heritage preservation with modern usability, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and respect for the original fabric”

Large Housing Development:
Bulrush Court in London by Pitman Tozer Architects uses Floren Avorio in this gorgeous redevelopment as part of a 950-home masterplan. This phase of the project offers 144 affordable homes in a mid-rise mansion block – it also includes a public area and commercial space. Built with community in mind, the project is conceived as a city block with ample opportunity for human interaction. Clay Brick is used for the facades, with different coloured brick from different suppliers creating bold blocks of colour between the floors. The soft reds and pinks of Florens Avorio doing a wonderful job of offsetting against other colours.
Judges’ Comments:
“A refined and coherent composition, elevated by warm brick tones, subtle detailing, and durable base treatments”
