Project overview
Aspen Wood, a state-of-the-art facility with two 20-bed wards designed to support individuals with complex forensic learning disability needs, was completed in late 2023. Following an extensive staff training period, it has recently begun admitting its first patients.
The facility features modern, adaptable wards, each divided into 5-bed clusters, with a strong focus on activity-based therapies and sensory design within the learning disability nursing pathway. The layout includes innovative spaces such as immersive therapy rooms, serene contemplation areas, vibrant music therapy zones, and well-equipped gyms. The interior design prioritises simplicity, abundant natural light, muted colour palettes, and surfaces that are sensitive to neurodiversity. A central café serves as a hub for social interaction and rehabilitation, while the interior is entirely anti-ligature and robust, with discreet service walkways.
Exterior aesthetics blend shifting tones of grey, with Blockleys Sterling Grey, Windermere Grey, Pennine Buff, and Black Smooth bricks forming a distinctive superstructure extending from a central hub. Nestled amidst open, green courtyards, the design cultivates a tranquil and welcoming atmosphere for its occupants.
Sustainability was a priority in the construction of Aspen Wood, which achieved an excellent BREEAM rating. Features such as solar shading, energy-efficient passive design, resilient materials, and high-performance glazing were incorporated to enhance comfort, maximise natural light, and mitigate climate change effects.
