Battersea Power Station

One of the UK’s most ambitious restorations, Battersea Power Station has been transformed from a derelict industrial relic into a vibrant cultural and commercial hub.

Project overview

One of the UK’s most ambitious restorations, Battersea Power Station has been transformed from a derelict industrial relic into a vibrant cultural and commercial hub. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre and Purcell Architects, this award-winning project preserves the iconic structure while introducing luxury residences, retail, and public spaces.

At the heart of this redevelopment, Michelmersh’s Blockleys brand supplied over 500,000 bricks and 20,000 bespoke shapes, meticulously crafted to match the original masonry. A bespoke blend of five Michelmersh products ensures a seamless integration of new and old, reinforcing the station’s architectural legacy.

Spanning 42 acres of former industrial land, the Battersea Power Station redevelopment is redefining London’s skyline. The master plan includes 18 acres of public space, over 250 shops, cafés, and restaurants, as well as private and affordable homes. With the extension of the Northern Line, the project establishes a new town centre and business district, attracting global investment and innovation.

Each phase of this £9bn transformation is shaped by world-renowned architects. Wilkinson Eyre oversaw the restoration of the Grade II*-listed Power Station (Phase 2), while Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners brought striking contemporary designs to Electric Boulevard, Battersea Roof Gardens, and Prospect Place (Phase 3).

Michelmersh’s involvement spanned years of intensive product development, including the commissioning of a bespoke cutting plant to achieve the precise dimensions needed. The result is a striking brickwork façade that pays homage to Battersea’s industrial past while securing its future as a modern landmark.

Beyond its architectural impact, the redevelopment is a driving force for skills development, with the Battersea Academy for Skills Excellence (BASE) providing training and employment opportunities for local talent.

A true testament to the resilience of brick, Battersea Power Station’s regeneration ensures this historic icon continues to shape London’s future for generations to come.
