Project overview
ITV Studios by Jenkins Design Services marks a significant relocation from Central Manchester to Media City, Salford Quay, bringing with it the challenge of faithfully recreating the iconic Coronation Street set. Ensuring the seamless transition of ‘Weatherfield’ to its new home, Blockleys supplied 180,000 bespoke clay units, carefully developed to match the original aesthetic.
Initially specified with an imported European brick, the project instead adopted a UK-manufactured alternative, improving cost efficiency and sustainability. Blockleys developed two tailored Synthesis blends, S14 & S17, over six months, combining smooth Charcoal/Blue and Black/Blue bricks. Supplied in preblended packs from the Telford plant, this approach ensured consistency across the expansive façade while simplifying installation.
Beyond the main elevations, architectural detailing played a key role. The recessed vertical window beneath the ITV signage features 500 elongated ‘Dogleg’ specials, each individually hand-finished to match the smooth texture of the blend. Completed within eight weeks, this precision work ensured seamless integration with the surrounding masonry.
McCrory Brickwork executed the brickwork package with exceptional craftsmanship, ensuring the blends remained true to the original character of the set. Their careful approach preserved the authenticity of Coronation Street while delivering the durability and quality required for a modern production facility.
Through meticulous material selection and expert craftsmanship, Blockleys has helped shape ITV Studios into a new broadcasting landmark, securing Coronation Street’s legacy at Media City.
