Project overview
Leon House, The Heights occupies a constrained, underutilised site in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, one of London’s oldest settlements and a place where brick has shaped the character of streets, institutions and homes for centuries. Gibson Thornley Architects used that context as the starting point for a building that needed to do more than fill a gap in the streetscape.
Freshfield Lane First Quality Multi was chosen as the defining material, its warm range of red tones connecting The Heights directly to the established fabric of Greenwich. Highly articulated brickwork, enriched with precast detailing, gives the elevations depth and rhythm, rewarding close attention while reading confidently from a distance.
The Heights provides 48 discounted homes for first-time buyers, comprising 45 one-bedroom and 3 two-bedroom apartments, including wheelchair-adaptable units. Efficient Pocket Living floor plans make the most of every square metre, with many homes dual aspect and upper floors opening to views across the city.
A landscaped rooftop terrace and a sheltered courtyard garden at ground level give residents generous shared outdoor spaces, both defined by the same brickwork that gives the building its character on the street.
Five minutes from Charlton Station, The Heights addresses a genuine need for affordable ownership in Zone 3. By committing to brick as both a contextual and expressive choice, Gibson Thornley has produced a building that belongs to its place.
