Project overview
Marchwood was envisioned from a bricklayer’s perspective, reflecting the ideal architectural aesthetics of a home. It represents the owner’s professional journey, built on years of hands-on experience in bricklaying.
The exterior is fully clad in brick and clay, with window sills featuring tile creases and brick headers, while the arches above are precisely gauged, with no stonework in sight and many finer details were developed on-site, with creative freedom granted for the mid-band design. Several dry bonding trials were conducted before finalizing the details, with both bricklayers and apprentices contributing to the process. Notably, the central brick in the mid-band—a reversed plinth—points left and right along either side of the building.
The project features various brick bonds, showcasing the team’s expertise. Flemish bonds define the main elevations, while the gable ends highlight herringbone and diagonal interlacing patterns. A raked joint, followed by a polished finish, was chosen for the mortar, standing out as the preferred style. Intricate tile creasing along the flanks reflects the team’s pride in their craftsmanship, with every member, from bricklayers to apprentices, contributing to the detailing. The chimney dubbed “Rope twist chimney,” was created using specially made bricks to achieve its distinctive rope-like design.
Ultimately, Marchwood is a tribute to the skill and dedication of bricklayers, crafted by those who truly understand the art of their trade. It stands as a visual showcase of craftsmanship, featuring a wide range of techniques and details.
