Project overview
Solent Sports Complex was designed by @architectureplb and was created as a way to enhance the reputation of Solent University. It was designed to exist within a period of development and act as a forerunner for a stage of future developments.
Blockley’s Synthesis S18 was used, and the brick was able to contribute to its BREEAM Excellent rating. The dark colours of the bricks used creates contrast with the secondary part of the sports complex.
Interestingly, due to the areas damage during the 1940 Southampton blitz, a full Unexploded Ordnance Survey was carried out before any construction work could begin. The area of Southampton damaged by bombs in the Second World War is represented in the pattern shown on the outside of the building.
Solent Sports Complex was shortlisted in the South Category for the RIBA Awards and the RIBA Social Impact Awards 2020.
