A great night for Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC at the annual Brick Awards on Wednesday 2nd November 2011.
The Brick Awards recognise excellence in design and construction using brick. Each year hundreds of entries are submitted and 15 prestigious trophies and more than 50 certificates are issued to the successful projects. The architect/designer, brick manufacturer and specialist brickwork contractor are all acknowledged on each project. The Awards are made in a number of categories covering different aspects of design and construction.
The Event, held in London, saw two of MBH’s 11 shortlisted projects win awards: Holiday Inn Express in Manchester for Best Commercial Building and Sullingstead for Best Outdoor Space.
Using Freshfield Lane Handmade Facings, Charnwood Horsham Mix and Michelmersh Mellow Creasing Tiles, Sullingstead’s Architects Michael Edwards who was at the event to collect his award commented, “I am delighted to receive this award and would like to thank everyone that was involved in this delightful project for their contributions.”
The BDA Judges commented on Sullingstead, ‘Part of a major restoration of a Lutyens house. The craftsmanship is exemplary and the G. Jekyll landscape has been re-located and extended in immaculate condition. Using clay slips and brick on edge with committed planting, the garden is magnificent. Some features such as the fountain have been recreated from unrealised Lutyens designs, other elements such as the summer house are current designs but sympathetic. The brick-terrace colonnade links the house and the garden with a strong formal axis which creates a truly beautiful space. The location on a promontory with the valleys below, adds to the special nature of this formal garden. Strong lines of symmetry and reworking of the original plans. A superb piece of work’
Commenting on this project the judges said, The building is a many layered challenge, within a difficult inner city site. The site presented many problems which were solved in a positive and determined manner with detailing which has proved to be precise and effective. This attractive building with precise detailing has been well thought out with a good interior. It was built on a very difficult, triangular site, and has made a positive contribution to the city.’
The annual Brick Awards is one of the longest established and most widely respected design awards in the UK.
