Project overview
Ronald McDonald House, Lambeth serves the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Ronald McDonald houses offer a home-away-from-home for families who have children in a nearby hospital. This helps to reduce the financial strain on them by offering free accommodation while the child is in hospital and a degree of normalcy at a much-needed time. Built on a site adjacent to Lambeth Palace and Gardens, the 59-bedroom house is at the centre of the local Conservation Area. The project uses FabSpeed designed load-bearing structural lintels faced with bespoke Michelmersh group I-line bricks. These are used to create brick depths to the soffit and enhance the appearance of the masonry used.
Bolt-up units were utilised on the ground floor to create a continuous band of unsupported brickwork. The RMHC’s sustainability agenda meant that the building was required to meet high sustainability standards, the successful implementation of FabSpeed and Michelmersh products helped the project to acquire a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and EPC rating of ‘A’ and a predicted 50% improvement on energy performance over building regulation requirements.
