Project overview
Town House is Kingston University’s RIBA Stirling Prize-winning new building on the Penrhyn Road campus. Designed by Grafton Architects, the challenging brief included necessities such as creating welcoming spaces for students and the public, utilising green practices, and encouraging collaboration between disciplines.
Light floods interior areas to give the building an open feeling, while polished concrete and wooden stairs create an enduring feeling of quality. Despite the openness of the project, the Library and performance studies do not intrude upon one another and views out onto the street areas open to the public as views from the rooftop terrace are over the nearby areas, this unity helps connect the student and local communities – A vital goal for the university.
Freshfield Lanes First Quality Multis were used to create a façade sympathetic to the aesthetics of the local area. The Clay Brick façade also provides increased thermal retention, helping the building to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.
Town House has also won the 2022 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, one of the most prestigious awards in European architecture, Kingston University is the first time a university building has won.
